Know stroke symptoms and act FAST

Active Senior Living

Do you know the stroke symptoms? Even though stroke is the fourth leading cause of death among Americans and the third among women, one in five U.S. women can’t identify a single warning sign, according to a study published in the journal Stroke.

Stroke Symptoms

Most U.S. women wouldn’t know a stroke if they felt or saw one.

When it comes to treating a stroke victim, every minute counts. In fact, each moment that passes without treatment increases the likelihood of permanent damage or death, reports NPR. So the first steps to getting help are being able to spot a stroke in yourself or others and knowing how to respond.

More obvious stroke symptoms:

  • Drooping face
  • Speech difficulty
  • Weakness or numbness in one of the arms

Lesser known stroke symptoms:

  • Sudden onset of dizziness
  • Severe headache
  • Vision loss

Use FAST to remember the warning signs of stroke. Call 9-1-1 immediately, if you or someone you know is exhibiting stroke symptoms.
